How to scan a statistics problem

Why scanning beats retyping

Statistics homework is full of subscripts, inequalities, and tables. Retyping a confidence-interval prompt from a worksheet is slow, and one missing minus sign changes the answer. A camera capture keeps the original wording so the solver sees the same problem you were given.

What you need

• An iPhone or iPad running iOS 17 or later
• Statistics Problem Solver Pro (free to download)
• A printed page, textbook, or handwritten problem with enough light to read

Step-by-step: scan the problem

1. Open the app. On the home screen, choose Scan Problem. The listing describes this as pointing the camera at the problem.
2. Frame the question. Fill the view with the statement, data, and what you are asked to find. Avoid other problems on the same page.
3. Crop. Trim to the part that matters so headers, doodles, and the next exercise are left out.
4. Wait for the solution. You should see readable steps, the exact formula, and a highlighted final answer. Expand any step if the substitution is unclear.
5. Save or copy. Every solve is stored in History on the device. You can copy the result or turn the solution into flashcards.

If you would rather type

Prefer the keyboard? Type the problem and add a topic hint (for example z-score or regression) so the solver starts from the right method. Typing is useful when the question is already in Notes, Mail, or a PDF you can copy.

Useful tips

• Hold the phone parallel to the page to reduce keystone distortion on tables.
• Increase brightness or move to a lamp if pencil marks are faint.
• If two questions sit side by side, crop one at a time.

Common mistakes

• Capturing the whole worksheet. Extra problems confuse which question to solve. Crop tightly.
• Missing the “find” sentence. Many stats items include data in one paragraph and the actual question in the next. Include both.
• Expecting the camera to work without permission. iOS will ask for camera access the first time you scan.
• Using scan when a calculator is enough. Mean, standard deviation, and z-score have dedicated offline tools.
